Fall

Fall is my second most favorite time of year. As the colors change and leaves drop, I'll be checking the forms of my fruit and deciduous trees and deciding how much pruning to do when the ground freezes. In addition, it's time to clean off roofs and gutters and prune branches back from the house.

This is also a good time to tackle evergreens. Yesterday's wind showed me which trees need selective pruning to lessen the weight on some branches. This will not only improve their resilience to winter winds and snow but also allow a little more light to the shrubs underneath and improve my view.

Last but not least, it's time to remove any leftover weeds from the beds before spreading fresh mulch. I'll wait until the first frost to cover more delicate shrubs and perennials with a light network of branches.

Have a safe and happy Halloween and Thanksgiving!
